STOP! using PUBLIC WIFI to watch porn!

IT can be very dangerous to watch pornographic material whilst using public Wi-Fi for a lot of security reasons.Whilst we do not encourage it, we do know that many people access the web for such reasons and this is why it may not be safe to so.

Websites use online cookies to store data on a user’s device, and it is this data that is then used to trace one’s search history for better online experiences and can be sold to advertisers, this explains why different users receive different adverts and suggestions online.

When you use your real IP address while web surfing, hackers can steal your sensitive information or a porn company which you view can be hacked and all personal information of visitors can be obtained and used for blackmailing.

The Brazzers case serves as an example of cyber bullying. Someone hacked their account and blackmailed them and when they failed to comply, almost 800 000 accounts of visitors were leaked to the darkweb.

Their emails, usernames and plain-text passwords were leaked. Even users who did not use the forums and had just registered on the site had their data leaked.

Anyone on the same hotspot can easily see what the next person is up to, unless one  is accessing encrypted websites that start with https and almost all adult sites do not fall under this category, hence the danger.  According to the Wall Street Journal, "around 30 million people regularly watch porn. Chances are that, half of these people do so using incognito mode, which raises the question, if your session history is not stored locally, then where is it saved?"

Most people think they are safe by browsing in incognito mode or private browsing, but the reality is that, it is only one of the steps taken.

This creates a false sense of security because incognito mode only prevents people from accessing your search history in your device but it does not hide one’s identity or IP address online. To show that incognito mode is not as reliable in hiding one’s identity as you think, try accessing any material that has been deemed “offensive” by your network provider, be it your boss or school head, you’ll see that it will still automatically disqualify that search and the authorities involved will know about it.

However there is a way to ensure that your search history and your personal details are safe and that is through downloading Virtual Private Networks (VPN)s. A  virtual private network (VPN) is programming that creates a safe, encrypted connection.  Typically, it is used over a less secure network, such as the public internet. It uses tunneling protocols to encrypt data at the sending end, and decrypt it at the receiving end.  The originating and receiving network addresses are also encrypted to provide better security for online activities. It can also be used to provide privacy and security.

They work by routing your device's internet connection through your chosen VPN's private server rather than your internet service provider (ISP) so that when your data is transmitted to the internet, it comes from the VPN rather than your computer. If someone tries to hack the information, they will then come across encrypted data.
